THE MOST COMMON SLEEP DISORDERS ARE:
Obstructive sleep apnea - often occurs in loud snorers resulting in difficulty breathing and breath-holding. Many people unknowingly have obstructive sleep apnea but are unaware until their bed partner complains of their heavy snoring. People with obstructive sleep apnea have non-refreshing, morning headaches, irritability, insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness. If left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea can aggravate heart disease and high blood presure and is associated with strokes.
Restless legs syndrome - is an unpleasant sensation in the limbs when people are lying or sitting still, especially at bedtime.
Periodic limb movement disorder - causes involuntary limb movements or kicking that happen while a person sleeps, sometimes resulting in arousals that can fragment sleep.
Narcolepsy - is characterized by overwhelming and excessive daytime sleepiness even after a good night of sleep. Irresistable sleep attacks, vivid dreaming while falling asleep, and sudden muscular weakness are symptoms.
Insomnia - difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep.
